The new London Mercantile Court has opened its doors in the Royal Courts of
Justice at the Strand.
The Mercantile Court operates a separate list within the Commercial Court
following rule changes that came into effect on 1 October 2006.
The new court seeks to resolve business cases that do not require trial by High
Court Judges in the full Commercial Court. This will mean less complex cases can
be dealt with faster and at proportionate cost.
In addition parties will be able to use the Central London Mediation Scheme for
alternative dispute resolution.
Judge David Mackie QC is the judge in charge of the new London Mercantile Court,
and will work closely with the Commercial Court regarding assignment of cases.
The court is also part of the south eastern circuit and will hear mercantile
cases outside London.
The mercantile court used to operate under the jurisdiction of the London Civil
Justice Centre.
The new court under the Commercial Court brings all of London's business cases
under one roof.
