Margaret Hodge, the Minister responsible for SMEs, has written to retailer
Matalan for an explanation of its actions in a dispute with suppliers.
The Forum of Private Business (FPB) has welcomed the decision. Chief Executive,
Nick Goulding, commented: “I am glad that the Minister has taken an interest in
this case and is pushing for a resolution for our members who still have amounts
outstanding in their accounts”.
The FPB is urging Matalan to return to discussions to resolve the dispute, which
began when the high street retailer decided to change payment terms, imposing a
mandatory 2% reduction on orders for the second half of 2005.
The FPB sent a dossier of evidence to Margaret Hodge in July, detailing
Matalan’s changes in payment terms and the responses from suppliers, asking her
to intervene in the dispute.
In a letter to the FPB, Mrs Hodge stated: “It is my hope that by opening up a
dialogue we can resolve this situation to everyone’s satisfaction.”
