The UK is responsible for a third of all unsecured consumer debt in western
Europe, a study has found.
The consumer credit market hit €314 billion in 2005 but is reaching saturation
point , forcing UK banks to look overseas for expansion opportunities, according
to the study from market analysts Datamonitor.
The study says the UK consumer credit market has grown at 2.7% a year for the
past five years.
In Western Europe as a whole, the market has grown at 8.3% per year, showing
there are opportunities for lenders outside the UK
