The Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) recently
produced an assessment of the likely economic impact of forthcoming regulation
on the farming industry in England.
In it, they estimate that increased regulation will have a minimal impact on all
farming sectors with the exception of dairy, grazing livestock in ‘less favoured
areas’ and pigs and poultry.
Around 14% of production from the pig sector and 10% of poultry production is
likely to become unprofitable as a result of compliance with new pollution
prevention regulations.
Donald MacRae, chief economist, Lloyds TSB Scotland, commented: “Given the
relative degree of market power between food retailers and the agricultural
industry, farmers will face a considerable challenge in recovering the extra
costs of regulation.
"The recently-formed taskforce on regulation of the National Farmers’ Union of
Scotland should be encouraged to produce a similar report for Scottish
agriculture.
"Farming for the future will require it.”
