Administrators John Reid and Ian Brown from Deloitte have been appointed as
joint administrators at Edinburgh Crystal Glass.
A lack of consumer demand and a failure to sell the Midlothian-based business
led to the appointments, said Reid. The company employs 420 staff in 14 factory outlets and 77 department stores.
The plight of the company has prompted calls for a task force to save the firm
from closure, and South of Scotland MSP Christine Grahame has written to
Enterprise Minister Nicol Stephen warning of the damage to the local economy if
ministers fail to act.
Grahame stated: "I think there is a very strong case to be made in doing all we
can to sustain and support this company and to ensure that the workforce keep
their jobs.
"I am urging ministers to put in place an economic task force to look
specifically at supporting the company during this difficult period."
Subsidiaries Caithness Glass Company Limited and Selkirk Glass Limited are
continuing to trade.
