The Forum of Private Business (FPB) is urging the new Secretary of State for
Trade and Industry to make unfair payment practices in the supply chain his
priority.
Nick Goulding, Chief Executive of the FPB has written to Alistair Darling to ask
him to focus on the issue.
Mr Goulding urged Mr Darling not to rest on his laurels, explaining: “The
secretary of state’s in-tray may be overflowing, however, the issue of late
payments and unfair practices must be made his top priority.”
The FPB, which represents more than 25,000 of the UK’s private businesses, is
currently acting on behalf of some of its members in a supply dispute with
Matalan.
Mr Goulding wrote to Alistair Darling shortly after the OFT referred the grocery
market to the competition commission.
Goulding added: “The Competition Commission must focus on this issue in their
inquiry.
“Suppliers feel isolated and unable to speak out for fear of retribution from
the supermarkets and retail giants.
"The upshot is a vastly uneven playing field for both the suppliers and small
retailers, who cannot match the low supermarket prices that result from these
unfair practices.”
