Equifax has added its support to the Information Commissioner’s call to
introduce prison sentences and heavy fines for the illegal buying and selling of
personal information.
Neil Munroe, External Affairs Director at Equifax commented: “It remains the
primary goal of Equifax to protect the privacy and identity of the individual.
"We therefore welcome the Information Commissioner’s call for prison sentences
and heavy fines for the buying and selling of personal information by those who
have not received explicit consent and authority to do so.
“It has been a concern of ours, for some time now, that the controls and
restrictions on unauthorised buying and selling of personal data were not
stringent enough.
"In particular, we have been concerned that the UK public could lose confidence
in those channels that have been approved by the Information Commissioner and
adhere to the Data Protection Act 1998. These include the credit reference
agencies which actually facilitate and empower people’s daily lives by providing
access to personal credit information for responsible lending decisions.”
