Figures released by Barclays Bank reveal that the number of business start-ups
fell 13% last year, the largest decline for a decade.
About 388,300 firms started up in 2005, compared with 446,500 in 2004.
The bank said the picture was not as bad as it might seem because 2003 and 2004
were particularly strong years for start-ups, so the fall brought the numbers
back to more typical levels.
